Description

Kovak Rhone was captured by a group of adventurers and sold as a gladiator. In the process of his capture his entire clan was wiped out. He was knocked unconscious by a spell, or he also would have been destroyed. Needless to say he was exceptionally good in the arena, and one day the Lord of house Vultrax requested that he fight in the arena for his freedom. After the battle Kovak was released. He then began the Minotaur Club in reverence to Somack, the god-hero that Kovak worships. This is the god of formal and public battle. Kovak keeps his reverence of Somack a secret due to the local laws about worshipping other gods, but most everyone knows about it – Kovak is just too well liked for anyone to punish him for it, as long as he doesn’t draw too many followers to his god.

Kovak Co-Owns the Cockatrice Club with Dalehart Burfoot, an upstanding halfling of the Crowley community. He is revered in the city of Crowley as a hero of battle and has yet to be defeated in the pit. Few are brave enough to intentionally confront Kovak, but occassionally an adventurer will come to town thinking that he has the correct stuff to take down the towering minotaur. Kovak is foul tempered, but is able to keep his temper under control so long as he is not deliberately provoked.

Kovak can usually be found inside of the Cockatrice Club. He usually stays within his private rooms, or overseeing the battles within the pit. Occassionally he can be found among the patrons of the Cockatrice Club, but he is solitary by nature and usually stays on the balcony and oversees the club. He rather likes Dalehart Burfoot and takes great pains in looking after the little halfling. Most of the employees of the Cockatrice Club has been working at the establishment for quite some time, and Kovak also looks after them as well as he is able. Few people cause any trouble within the Cockatrice Club.

The great minotaur will not talk about it but there is an interesting story about how the club got it's name. Animals are often used as combatants within the pit. Usually it is dogs, or cocks, and occasionally more exotic creatures. The animal fights occur as often if not more so than humanoid battles. Well, a local druid was appauled by this and decided to get a little revenge. He captured and boxed up a cockatrice and brought it to the fight. He left it within it's closed cell claiming to everyone that is was far too foul tempered of a creature to release before the battle. No one suspected his intentions and he was allowed to enter his "cock" into a battle with another rooster. The bell rang, he opened the cage and then ran back through the crowded building for the exit. The cock imerged from it's dark enclosure and before anyone knew what was happening several men and a rooster were turned into statuary. Many more were trampled as there was a mass exodus from the establishment. Kovak himself lept down from the balcony and quickly dispatched the foul beast. The mighty minotaur was in a rage for a week or more, constantly saying what he would do once the villanous druid was found. He put a bounty of 100 gold pieces for anyone who brought the druid in dead, and 200 gold pieces for the captured druid. He also had the cockatrice stuffed and mounted on the balcony, claiming that the perpetrator will one day be stuffed and stand next to the cockatrice. After that everyone started calling the place the Cockatrice Club. Kovak hated the name, but Dalehart saw that the community seemed to like it so therefore it must be good for business. The club has kept the name ever since.
